What to specify
- Retractable frames. If a trailer reverses too far, the frame gives way and springs back instead of bending.
- Inflatable seals. Once the vehicle is in place, inflated bags press against its sides and roof.
- Replacement curtains. Worn or torn curtains renewed on the existing frame.
- Guidance aids. Guide stripes, wheel guides and lights help drivers park centrally.
- Sized to your fleet. Curtain sizes matched to vehicle widths, heights and dock height.
Typical scopes of work
- Installing inflatable dock shelters at a chilled goods-in to help hold temperature while trailers are unloaded.
- Pricing shelters, levellers and sectional doors together for the refurbishment of an existing goods-in area.
- Fitting retractable dock shelters across a run of bays that serve a mixed fleet of vans and trailers.
Loading bay safety in England
Dock levellers, shelters and restraints are work equipment, so in Hertfordshire the business running the site must keep them in efficient working order under PUWER 1998, and keep traffic routes safe under the Workplace Regulations 1992. Dock levellers are built to BS EN 1398; powered loading bay doors are covered by the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 and BS EN 12453.
How the work is organised
Before work starts we send a method statement and risk assessment, confirm who on site will be our contact and agree where materials and access equipment will go. On shared industrial estates that can mean booking yard space with the landlord.

Dock shelters and seals in Hertfordshire: your questions
Which dock shelter suits our Hertfordshire warehouse?
Retractable shelters suit most mixed fleets. Inflatable shelters give a tighter seal for chilled, frozen or sensitive goods. Foam seals suit uniform fleets. We recommend one after recording your vehicles and dock on survey.
How much does a dock shelter cost in Hertfordshire?
Our guide prices are £2,195 to £5,495 ex VAT for a retractable dock shelter and £6,495 to £11,995 for an inflatable one, supplied and fitted. Once we have surveyed your bays in Hertfordshire, at no charge, the fixed price follows in writing.
Can a dock shelter in Hertfordshire be fitted with our existing leveller?
Usually, yes. The shelter fits around the dock door and works with most existing levellers, provided the bumpers stop the trailer at the right distance from the wall. We check the bumpers and leveller lip on survey.
