Options that matter on site
- Certified install. Fitted strictly to the manufacturer's specification for fixings, wall type and fire-stopping.
- Fail-safe closing. If the alarm sounds or the power goes, the shutter drops at a governed speed and closes the opening.
- Tested products. Every shutter comes with its maker's furnace test or assessment evidence and performance declaration.
- Records. Commissioning and drop test records handed over for the fire safety file.
- Warning devices. Sounders and beacons to warn people before and during descent.
What this work can involve
- Installing a motorised fire shutter that also serves as the daily goods door between two warehouse compartments.
- Fitting a 120-minute fire shutter to a conveyor opening between production and storage compartments, released by the fire alarm.
- Building up a blockwork wall to the tested construction before fitting a new compartment fire shutter.
Fire shutter law in England
A fire shutter only does its job if it closes when needed. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must keep fire safety equipment maintained in efficient working order, and keeping test records is the usual way to show it. Shutters must also stay as the manufacturer tested and certified them, so repairs should use the right parts. In Bideford, the enforcing authority is the local fire and rescue authority.
Keeping your site running during the work
For busy sites in Devon the work can be split across visits — preparation and framing first, door installation and commissioning second — so the opening is only out of action for the shortest time.
