What to specify
- Warning devices. Audible and visual warnings let people know the shutter is about to close.
- Battery back-up. Back-up units maintain controlled closing during a mains failure.
- Fail-safe closing. If the alarm sounds or the power goes, the shutter drops at a governed speed and closes the opening.
- Daily-use models. Motorised fire shutters that also work as everyday doors.
- Records. You receive records of the installation, commissioning and first drop test for your files.
Jobs we can carry out
- Building up a blockwork wall to the tested construction before fitting a new compartment fire shutter.
- Fitting a 120-minute fire shutter to a conveyor opening between production and storage compartments, released by the fire alarm.
- Supplying a fire shutter to a fire engineer's specification on a new-build unit, timed to the main contractor's programme.
Fire shutter law in England
A fire shutter only does its job if it closes when needed. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must keep fire safety equipment maintained in efficient working order, and keeping test records is the usual way to show it. Shutters must also stay as the manufacturer tested and certified them, so repairs should use the right parts. In Muswell Hill, the enforcing authority is the London Fire Commissioner (London Fire Brigade).
How the work is organised
Downtime matters on a working site, so the programme is set around your shifts. For a single door the opening is usually needed for a day; multi-door jobs are done one bay at a time so deliveries keep moving.
