Options for complete loading bays in Derby
- Phased refurbishment. Bays refurbished one at a time so the site keeps trading.
- Impact protection. Bumpers, wheel guides and bollards protect the building and equipment.
- Shelters and seals. A shelter or seal closes the gap around the vehicle during loading.
- Sectional doors. Well-sealed, insulated dock doors that open fully and run clear of the leveller.
- One package. Door, leveller, shelter, bumpers and lights specified together.
Typical scopes of work
- Designing and fitting a run of complete loading bays on a new-build distribution centre to the main contractor's programme.
- Specifying vehicle restraints, traffic lights and dock lights as part of a review of how trailers leave the dock.
- Converting a yard roller shutter opening into a full loading bay with a loading house, leveller and shelter.
Loading bay safety in England
Dock levellers, shelters and restraints are work equipment, so in Derby the business running the site must keep them in efficient working order under PUWER 1998, and keep traffic routes safe under the Workplace Regulations 1992. Dock levellers are built to BS EN 1398; powered loading bay doors are covered by the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 and BS EN 12453.
Planning the work around your site
For busy sites in Derbyshire the work can be split across visits — preparation and framing first, door installation and commissioning second — so the opening is only out of action for the shortest time.

Questions from businesses in Derby
What safety systems should our Derby loading bays have?
That follows your risk assessment, but busy bays commonly have traffic lights, door-leveller interlocks, vehicle restraints or sensored chocks, dock lights and edge protection. We recommend a package after seeing how your bays are used.
Can you refurbish our loading bays in Derby without closing the site?
Yes. Bays can be refurbished one at a time so the others stay in use, and work can be done out of hours where needed. Each bay is commissioned before we move on to the next.
Can a loading bay be added to our Derby unit without a pit?
Often, yes. A loading house built out in front of the door, or an edge-of-dock leveller for light use, avoids cutting a pit in the floor. We check which option suits the building and the traffic on survey.
