What to specify
- Swing-lip levellers. Hinged lips that flip out and land on the trailer bed, suited to most loading bays.
- Telescopic lips. A sliding lip that reaches further and lands exactly where the driver needs it.
- Sized to your fleet. Platform length and capacity chosen for your vehicles and forklifts.
- Door interlocks. Linking the leveller and door controls prevents either one being used out of sequence.
- Toe guards. Guards along each side keep feet out from under the moving platform.
Typical scopes of work
- Replacing a mechanical leveller with a hydraulic unit that has single-button automatic operation and a velocity fuse.
- Replacing worn swing-lip dock levellers in their existing pits, with pit edge repairs and new dock bumpers.
- Fitting an edge-of-dock leveller to a lightly used bay where a full leveller pit is not needed.
Who is responsible for loading bay equipment at a site in Broadstairs?
The employer or occupier is. PUWER 1998 requires work equipment to be maintained and inspected, and the Workplace Regulations 1992 cover vehicle and pedestrian routes around the dock. In practice that means planned servicing of levellers and doors, daily pre-use checks and a clear procedure to stop trailers moving during loading.
Access, phasing and timing
For busy sites in Kent the work can be split across visits — preparation and framing first, door installation and commissioning second — so the opening is only out of action for the shortest time.
