Options for door automation and controls in Edinburgh
- Safety devices. Every automated door gets the detection its risk assessment needs, tested before use.
- Manual-to-electric. Conversions for sectional, roller and sliding doors in good order.
- Traffic lights. Red and green lights and warning beacons for drivers.
- Interlocks. Airlocks, door-to-leveller and fire alarm interfaces.
- Inverter drives. Soft start and stop with faster opening for high-cycle doors.
What this work can involve
- Fitting a centre-mounted motor to a roller shutter where a side wall leaves no room at the barrel end.
- Installing an airlock interlock between two high-speed doors so only one can be open at a time.
- Fitting induction loops and an inverter control panel so forklifts can open a busy internal door without stopping.
Who is responsible for door safety at a site in Edinburgh?
In Scotland, two sets of duties meet at a powered door. The installer who supplies or motorises it must hand over a door that meets the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, tested against BS EN 12453 and documented. The business in control of the premises must then maintain it: regulation 5 of the Workplace Regulations 1992 covers maintenance, and regulation 18 requires upward-opening doors to have a device that stops them falling back and powered doors to have features that prevent trapping.
How the work is organised
Most installations in Edinburgh can be phased so part of the site keeps working. We agree access routes, exclusion zones and any temporary security with you before the team arrives, and can work early mornings, evenings or weekends where the business needs it.

Your questions about door automation and controls
Which activation would suit our Edinburgh site?
It depends on who uses the door. Buttons suit staff, remotes suit drivers, pull cords and loops suit forklifts, and radar suits mixed traffic. We look at your traffic on survey and recommend a set-up.
Can our door in Edinburgh be automated?
If the door is in good mechanical order and a suitable motor is available, usually yes. We check balance, springs, cables, guides and the curtain or panels on survey, and recommend repair or replacement first if needed.
Do automated doors in Edinburgh need more maintenance?
Powered doors need their motors, controls and safety devices checked as well as the mechanical parts, so at least an annual service is common practice, more often for busy doors. Servicing visits are chargeable; the survey for an automation job is free.
