What to specify

Certified install. Fitted strictly to the manufacturer's specification for fixings, wall type and fire-stopping.
Alarm interface. We agree the cause-and-effect with your alarm contractor and prove the release at commissioning.
Fail-safe closing. If the alarm sounds or the power goes, the shutter drops at a governed speed and closes the opening.
Tested products. Shutters supplied with the manufacturer's fire test evidence and Declaration of Performance.
Warning devices. Audible and visual warnings let people know the shutter is about to close.

Typical scopes of work

Coordinating commissioning with the fire alarm contractor so the shutter release is proven during the same visit.
Building up a blockwork wall to the tested construction before fitting a new compartment fire shutter.
Replacing an obsolete kitchen servery fire shutter with a new shutter released by the fire alarm panel.

Fire shutter law in England

A fire shutter only does its job if it closes when needed. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must keep fire safety equipment maintained in efficient working order, and keeping test records is the usual way to show it. Shutters must also stay as the manufacturer tested and certified them, so repairs should use the right parts. In Middleton, the enforcing authority is the local fire and rescue authority.

How the work is organised

For busy sites in Greater Manchester the work can be split across visits — preparation and framing first, door installation and commissioning second — so the opening is only out of action for the shortest time.
