What to specify
- Manual override. A manual means of opening is always kept, so the door is never stuck shut without power.
- Activation options. Buttons, key switches, remotes, pull cords, loops, radar and access control.
- Matched motors. Direct, centre-mounted, chain-drive or tubular motors sized to the door.
- Traffic lights. Red and green lights and warning beacons for drivers.
- Interlocks. Airlocks, door-to-leveller and fire alarm interfaces.
Typical scopes of work
- Installing an airlock interlock between two high-speed doors so only one can be open at a time.
- Adding traffic lights and warning beacons to a yard door shared by lorries and pedestrians.
- Replacing an obsolete control panel with a modern unit, then re-testing the safety devices and closing forces.
Who is responsible for door safety at a site in Derbyshire?
In England, two sets of duties meet at a powered door. The installer who supplies or motorises it must hand over a door that meets the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, tested against BS EN 12453 and documented. The business in control of the premises must then maintain it: regulation 5 of the Workplace Regulations 1992 covers maintenance, and regulation 18 requires upward-opening doors to have a device that stops them falling back and powered doors to have features that prevent trapping.
Planning the work around your site
For busy sites in the East Midlands the work can be split across visits — preparation and framing first, door installation and commissioning second — so the opening is only out of action for the shortest time.

Door automation and controls in Derbyshire: your questions
How long does a door automation job take in Derbyshire?
A straightforward conversion is usually completed and commissioned in a day. Loops, interlocks and traffic lights add time, and we plan the work so the door is out of use for as little time as possible.
Do you take responsibility for the conformity paperwork in Derbyshire?
Yes. When we convert a door to power, we carry out the risk assessment, test the door and issue the Declaration of Conformity and user instructions, as the person who has made it a machine.
Can you add interlocks or traffic lights to doors around the East Midlands?
Yes. We fit airlock interlocks, door-to-leveller interlocks, traffic lights and warning beacons to new and existing doors across the East Midlands, subject to compatibility with the control panels already fitted, and replace panels where they cannot accept the extra inputs.
