What to specify
- Manual override. A manual means of opening is always kept, so the door is never stuck shut without power.
- Inverter drives. Soft start and stop with faster opening for high-cycle doors.
- Safety devices. Every automated door gets the detection its risk assessment needs, tested before use.
- Traffic lights. Red and green lights and warning beacons for drivers.
- Matched motors. Direct, centre-mounted, chain-drive or tubular motors sized to the door.
Typical scopes of work
- Adding radar with cross-traffic suppression to a door on a busy aisle so passing trucks do not open it.
- Adding traffic lights and warning beacons to a yard door shared by lorries and pedestrians.
- Linking loading bay doors to dock leveller controls so levellers deploy only when the doors are fully open.
Safety law for industrial doors in England
Industrial doors in Tyne and Wear are covered by the same rules as the rest of Great Britain. On handover you should receive user instructions and, for a powered door, the conformity paperwork, because the installer is treated as the manufacturer when they assemble or motorise it. Afterwards, keeping the door in efficient working order is the occupier's job under the Workplace Regulations 1992 and PUWER 1998, which in practice means regular servicing and a written log.
Access, phasing and timing
Where a door is being replaced, the opening has to be made secure at the end of each day. We plan strip-out, any new framing and the new door so the gap is never left open overnight unless you have agreed temporary measures.

Door automation and controls in Tyne and Wear: your questions
Do automated doors in Tyne and Wear need more maintenance?
Powered doors need their motors, controls and safety devices checked as well as the mechanical parts, so at least an annual service is common practice, more often for busy doors. Servicing visits are chargeable; the survey for an automation job is free.
Which activation would suit our Tyne and Wear site?
It depends on who uses the door. Buttons suit staff, remotes suit drivers, pull cords and loops suit forklifts, and radar suits mixed traffic. We look at your traffic on survey and recommend a set-up.
How much does it cost to make a door electric in Tyne and Wear?
Our guide price for a manual-to-electric conversion is £1,195 to £3,195 ex VAT, including motor, control panel, basic controls and commissioning. Extra controls and safety devices are priced separately, and your fixed price in Tyne and Wear follows a free survey.
